This window opens to the gap its owner chose and stops there. The restrictors are circled. Most people never spot them.

An open sash window is lovely right up until a small child gets curious about it. Flyscreens don't hold weight and a lock only works while the window stays shut. In a warm room, it won't stay shut.

Window restrictors solve the actual problem: the window still opens for air, but only as far as you decide. Set them at 150mm or whatever suits the room, and the sash stops there every single time.

How they work

Each restrictor is a small brass device embedded in the window frame, one on each side. When the sash rises, it meets the restrictor arms and stops. To open the window fully for cleaning or a hot evening, press the release and the sash slides right up. When you close the window again, the restrictors reset themselves automatically. There is no key to find and nothing to remember at bedtime.

Tested against the standard written for exactly this

• Tested to ASTM F2090, the window fall prevention standard for young children, across four versions (2008 to 2017)
• Fitted per the instructions, the clear opening is limited so a child cannot pass through
• Safety device load capacity of 350N verified to BS EN 14351-1:2006 by a UKAS accredited laboratory
• Bonus: a sash window fitted with these devices also passed PAS 24:2016 enhanced security testing, so they guard against burglars as well as tumbles

Fitting: about twenty minutes a window

A drill, a chisel, a screwdriver. Cut a small mortise each side at your chosen height, screw the faceplates down, fit the buffer pads, done. The full instructions walk it through step by step.

Restrictors protect against accidental falls by young children but are not a substitute for supervision. Keep them engaged unless the window is needed for emergency escape, never padlock them, and teach older household members how to release them in an emergency.
